Northwestern University Dance Marathon 2008 reaches all-time fundraising high

With record number of dancers, the completely student-run philanthropy raises $933,855.

EVANSTON, IL – This year’s Northwestern University students shattered records across the board in the 34th annual Dance Marathon. An unprecedented number of students – more than 750 – raised an all-time fundraising high of $933,855 for the Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation and the Evanston Community Foundation.

“To see Northwestern students come together to a magnitude that they never have before and achieve so much is a testament to what students can do and how they can make a real difference,” said Tara Corrigan, DM Executive Co-Chair. “Dance Marathon is proud of Northwestern.”DM 2008

Last year’s event had about 600 dancers and raised $708,711. Organizers attribute the growth to an increase in group participation. The top fundraising group, Delta Gamma & Zeta Beta Tau, raised $120,002. More student groups than ever before, 31 different groups, had dancer teams.

“We’re blown away by the growth this year, not only financially, but by the increase in the number of dancers and widespread campus interest in DM,” said Krysta Kauble, DM Executive Co-Chair. “Because of NU’s commitment to DM, we have made such an incredible financial impact on our two deserving beneficiaries.”

The funds from DM will take Bear Necessities to the next level. The monies will go toward additional research grants and programming for cancer patients and their families. The Evanston Community Foundation will be able to distribute even more grants to community organizations. DM Executive Co-Chairs, Corrigan and Kauble sit on the ECF grant selection committee and help decide where these funds go.

Students danced for 30 hours starting on March 7 at 7:00 p.m. and ended shortly after 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 9. Every student couple had to raise $800 for the honor of dancing.
