NUDM Explained: Canning

NUDM Explained: Canning

Let’s face it: whether you’re a first-time dancer or a soon-to-be member of the 120-hour club, raising money for NUDM can be daunting. Luckily, there is an easy, fun, and accessible way to quickly fundraise: canning! Canning is a fundraising method where you and your fellow NUDM-ers stand (or dance!) outside and ask the people around you for donations to NUDM.

Contrary to popular belief, spamming your friends and family with emails and social media posts is not the only way to raise money for the 30 hours. Canning is a fun way to connect face-to-face with the people donating to your page and feel more directly linked to NUDM and its cause. Since the $200 fundraising deadline is approaching (January 29th), now is the perfect time to get out in the community, show your NUDM spirit, and keep bringing in those donations.

Here are just a few tips for your first canning experience:

  1. Be enthusiastic! The more passion and energy you bring to canning, the more likely people are to donate. If you’re nervous about canning, try it with your team, or just with a group of friends; it makes it much easier to break any feelings of awkwardness or discomfort.
  2. Along those same lines, bring along music or a speaker! Not only is it on-brand to be dancing around, but it helps bring up everyone’s energy levels. Plus, it helps pass the time and warm you up.
  3. If you’re canning by an intersection, you can walk in between cars when the stoplight turns red to get more donations and reach more people. Remember to proceed with caution!
  4. Dress warmly! If you decide to can outside, you’ll be standing outside for 1-2 hours, so gloves, hats, and layers are a must. Bundle up so that your canning experience can be as positive as possible!

Regardless of where you go, canning is a great way to fundraise. If you are on a team, ask them if they plan on going as a group. Teams, whether they are made up of residential halls, Greek life organizations, or other student groups, usually have a lot of amazing canning ideas and strategies. And, if you’re not a part of a team, just sign up at to hop onto a canning excursion with other dancers!

Canning opportunities are offered every day in Winnetka and Evanston during Winter Quarter. Check this link for more canning locations and more general information. Happy canning!
