Communities In Schools of Chicago is a nonprofit dedicated to addressing the opportunity gap in education by ensuring that every Chicago public school student graduates high school prepared for success. CIS of Chicago implements programs that fall within four core areas: college and career readiness; the arts; health and wellness; and behavioral and mental health. In addition, CIS works one-on-one with students identified as at high-risk of dropping out.
CIS of Chicago works specifically with Chicago Public School students. Every fall, 26,500 students enter freshman year in a CPS school. Four years later, nearly 6,000 of those students do not graduate from high school. With the help of CIS’s school wide programs and individual counseling, this retention rate increases dramatically. In the 2016-2017 school year, CIS’s school wide programs helped reach over 68,000 students. Of these, 311 were high school seniors, 100 percent of whom graduated at the end of the year.
CIS of Chicago prides itself on being the dropout prevention program that works. CIS’s programming works on the individual level with highly trained, master’s level professionals. On the school wide level, CIS connects schools with over 200 community partners to provide services in their core four areas, accomplishing their mission to surround students with a community of support that empowers them to stay in school and achieve in life.
